Movie description:
The project »5 × slum, now by ourselves« gathered over 80 young people from Rio’s favelas (slums), selected through workshops, script and filmmaking techniques to create a feature film consisting of five stories that reflect different facets of the daily lives of residents of these communities – with the promise of escape stereotypical representations.
1. Source of Income
Maicon studied very hard to enter Law School. He is the first one to attend college in his family and community, a favela in Rio de Janeiro, and he has to sustain his family working on a bakery as well. Maicon faces difficulties to handle the costs that the course demands, such as books and materials and, stimulated by a rich college friend, starts selling to his classmates the drugs he buys in the favela he lives.
2. Rice and Beans
One night, sleeping on the living room’s couch, Wesley, 12 years old, hears his father complaining to his mother that he has to eat rice and beans everyday, as trying to save money to build a room for his son. At least on his birthday, next day, he would be pleased to eat something else. Then, Wesley goes on a journey with his best friend to try to find a job in order to raise money to buy a chicken for his father’s birthday. As they fail in all their trials for many reasons, Wesley had no choice but steal a chicken.
3. Concert for Violin
Marcia, Jota and Ademir are children dwelling in the same favela. They make an oath to be friends forever after Marcia and Jota save Ademir’s life. Fifteen years later, Ademir becomes a policeman and Jota a drug dealer, which makes this pact impossible to keep. Marcia studies music and prepares herself for her first violin concert. A war between rival gangs on the favela they live takes them to a tragic encounter.
4. Let it Fly
Flavio is a very good kite flyer but unfortunately lets fly a kite that his friend Pardal had just built. The valuable lost kite falls on another favela nearby that is considered dangerous for being under control of a rival drug gang. Pardal and his group obligate him to go get the kite back. After a lot of tension, Flavio finds out that the »enemy« community is very like his own. And there’s where he meets his first love.
5. Let There Be Light
It’s Christmas Eve and there is no light in the favela. The light company workers can fix the problem, except for one part of the community, where they need a piece that has to come from far away. The people who live on this section of the favela get revolted and capture one of the light company’s workers, Lopes, making him a hostage. They will only let him out if someone else brings the piece to get the light back. Lopes ends up becoming integrated to the dwellers, celebrating Christmas with them and solving the light’s trouble in a surprising way.
